HAURAKI COUNTY COUNCIL
DRAINAGE OF 5,000 ACRES The constitution of an area of 5.000 acres of swamp, north of the Waitaka-ruru-Pokeno highway and between the sea and the hills, as a drainage district under the Lands Drainage Act, was supported by the Hauraki Flairs County Council at its meeting yesterday, and the council agreed to assume the duties of a drainage board. A scheme for draining the area lias been prepared, by the Bands Drainage Department at an estimated cost of £IO.OOO and the settlers are agreeable to be rated at Is an acre, plus the cost of maintenance. Owing to the smallness of the area the formation of a drainage board would entail high overhead costs, and it was on the recommendation of the Internal Affairs Department that the settlers asked the council to assume the duties of a drainage board. It was decided to apply for a revaluation of the land in the county. A group of Hopai West Road settlers was assured that metal access would be provided as soon as possible. The council agreed to bear its share of the cost of repairs to the Xgahina bridge, estimated to cost £550. The engineer. Mr. F. Basham, reported that the metalling of Rawerawe Road and Orchard West Road was completed, and the gravelling of the Xgarua-Kai-here Road was nearing completion. A start had been made with the metalling of Kaikahu Road and the Ngataipua Road would be completed in about ten days. The Kaihere-Tonehope Road gravelling was completed.
