HIGH DUTY ON WHEAT

POULTRYMEN HANDICAPPED FREIGHT GRANT WANTED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The conference of the New Zealand Poultry Association to-day discussed the wheat duties. The remits from the- Auckland Egg Producers’ Association and the Auckland Poultry Producers’ Association were taken together. These read as follows: ••Duty off wheat, or as an alternative, assistance by way of subsidy or a reduction in railway freights, to place North Island producers on the same basis as those in the South Island;” and “That the association make strong representation to the Government to lift tho duty off wheat, which at present constitutes a great handicp to thousands of poultrykeepers, for the benefit of a few wheat growers. With the duty taken off wheat there would not be the same necessity for such a high guarantee for export.”

After discussion an amendment was moved, “that the association send a deputation to wait on the Government, in the best interests of the North Island, with reference to a subsidy of a grant toward freight cost.” The mover, Mr. Cl. H. Bradford, said they were

merely running their heads gainst a brick wall in asking for the duty to be lifted. The Auckland delegates agreed to accept the amendment, which was carried.
