In the Market Place

PEACHES STILL CHEAP SOUTHERN POTATOES SELLING Golden Queen peaches are the dearest line offering on the City Markets at present, but prices are still reasonable. Fresher fruits coming forward on the sales benches have been responsible for better values. The feature of the vegetable market at to-day’s sales was the offering of the first shipment of Southern potatoes, ex Kaikorai. The Southern potatoes are the first that have been sold in Auckland this season. The quality is good, but the additional supplies have caused a slight slackening in general prices. Te Kauwhata grapes are still extremely cheap. There is a slight improvement in the demand for first grade apples. Bananas are scarce and high prices are ruling. An unusually large penning of poultry was at to-day’s auction. All classes of birds met with a keen demand, especially young cockerels and heavy hens. The supply of pullets is still heavy, but the quality to-day was not up to average.
