Men Who Dare Death In Quest of Speed
DAYTONA TRAGEDY IS IT WORTH WHILE? (United r.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 1 p.m. LONDON, Wednesday. Lee Bible’s death at Daytona Beach has caused a controversy in motoring circles on the value of such speeds. Mr. S. F. Edge, the veteran racer, and at present a motor manufacturer, says speed cars are not like ordinary ears in design and construction. Records are worthless, insofar as general development is concerned. Mr. Kay Don says there is a big query in his mind whether Mr. J. M. White’s car, in which Bible was killed, was suitable; but to ban record-break-ing would retard motor construction and development. Earl Howe, formerly Viscount Curzon, points out that fatal accidents occur in steeplechasing, hut it is not suggested that it should be stopped. Sir Herbert Austin says such attempts are of value regarding international propaganda, but he considers the attempts are going beyond requirements. Personally, he believes that Bible lost his life through the brakes burning out. He tried to apply them and found them useless.
The secretary of the Royal Automobile Club says Lockhart was killed at Daytona, but his death drew attention to wheel cramp, and resulted in big improvements in the steering of racing cars.
