SHEEP-STEALING CHARGE

FARMER ON TRIAL CONFUSION OF EARMARKS Press Association BLENHEIM. To-day. At the Blenheim Supreme Court today, the trial Is proceeding of Frederick William Hille, the charges being that, between March 1 and November 23, 1928, he stole four two-tootli halfbred wethers, the property of Christopher Smith, ana that he received sheep knowing them to be stolen. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Smith alleged that sheep were turned out on the block adjoining Hille’s property, and when they were mustered in August 9.0 were missing. In September Smith gave notice to Hille to muster, but this was not done until November.

Accused reported that lie had 28 of Smith’s sheep in his possession. Four sheep claimed by Hille were discovered to have Hille’s earmark in the left ear and an obliterated Tyntesfield earmark on the right ear. Smith bought the sheep from Mr. Tyntesfield and a small portion of the original were taken possession of by the police.

The case will last some time as a good many witnesses are to be called.
