POISON IN RIVER

TROUT AND EELS DIE ( Special to THE SUNI WHANGAREI, Tuesday. The flooding of the Hikurangi Coal Company’s mine has liberated the free sulphuric acid into the Wairua River, and is proving fatal to trout as well as eels. Dead trout, numbering over 35, were seen, drifting past in the vicinity of Jordan Bridge. A large number of dead eels were also seen at this spot, which is a favourite eeling ground for Maoris.

Whether stock drinking water will become affected is an important aspect and farmers are keeping their cattle from the stream. The water near Jordan is strong enough to burn the human skin.
