LICENSEE CHARGED
LIQUOR SUPPLIED AFTER HOURS FINES TOTAL ill Charged with exposing liquor for sale, and supplying liquor to a number of people after hours, E. G. Halle tt, licensee of the Marine Hotel, Howick, pleaded guilty, through Mr. McVeagli, at the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday, to exposing for sale, and to supplying liquor to three persons after hours. Sergeant Lambert, prosecuting for the police, withdrew the other charges of supplying. Mr. McVeagh said that there were some circumstances which might bear on the case. Defendant had just recently built the house, which was recognised as a seaside family resort, at an approximate cost of £II,OOO. The reports of the house, except for the present charges, were very good. No Sunday trading was allowed on any condition. The police gave the licensee a good reputation, and he had a series of testimonials from prominent citizens of Howick, which testify to the way the house has been conducted. He asked that lenient treatment be allowed to his client. Sergeant Lambert said that in consequence of complaints of proceedings at the hotel, accompanied by Constable* Xield, he went to Howick one Saturday evening at 9.20, and found the bar open, the licensee behind it, and a number of people inside. Some were drinking and some were standing about. All the occupants of the bar were sober, and they were all residents of the district. Hallett was fined £ 5 and ordered to pay 10s Court costs for exposing liquor for sale, and £2 on each of two charges of supplying liquor after hours, and court costs £l. On the third charge of supplying, he was convicted and ordered to pay Court costs 10s.
