POISONING SENSATION
ICE-CREAM AT PICNIC 70 VICTIMS TREATED (United. P-L By Telegraph Copyright) Kecd. 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, To day. Many persons were stricken with what appeared to be ptomaine poisoning at a churcli picnic near Newcastle on Saturday. The children had lunched, and sports and games were begun. Then ice-cream was suggested, and this was served to the children. Immediately after eating some one little girl fell writhing to the ground.
While the alarmed elder people were attending to her other children fell to the ground suffering great pain. Soon several adults -also were overcome, and their horrified friends made hurried calls for medical aid. Ten victims were admitted to the Newcastle Public Hospital, some being apparently in a serious condition; all those who were admitted to the hospital are now out of danger. Altogether 70 were treated. Complete mystery appears to envelop the poisoning. All efforts to trace its source have failed.
