BOAT CAPSIZES

TWO YOUTHS IN DANGER SWIM TO THE HINEMOA When their soiling-boat capsized oft Orakei, yesterday, two Devonport youths clung to the upturned boat for half an hour and then swam to the Government steamer Hinemoa, which was anchored near Point Resolution. They were taken off some hours later by a passing yacht. The youths. C. C. Jenkin, of Clarence Street, and A. Bramley, of Cheltenham Road, left Devonport at about 11 o'clock to go to Orakei, and they made good progress until they were off Orakei, when a sudden squall struck the boat. They tacked, but another squall struck them and their craft overturned. The choppy sea made their position precarious, and. after waiting for half |an hour in the hope of being picked j up. they found that the boat was ! drifting out into the harbour, so they decided to swim to the Hinemoa, which lay about 200 to 300 yards away. Retaining only their shorts, they set out. Bramley reaching the vessel first and flinging a rope to his almost exhausted companion. They endeavoured to attract attention by waving flags, but. although they saw their boat picked up by a launch, they could not attract the at- | tention of the occupants, and it was not until nearly 4 o’clock that they were taken off by a yacht, which was sailing close to the Hinemoa.
