GRAND AND LYRIC
“SEVENTH HEAVEN” Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell ' have the featured roles in the film, ! “7th Heaven,” which opens at the j Grand and Lyric Theatres this evening for a return visit to Auckland. These two youngsters, both of whom have come comet-like into the foreground among screen stars through their work in this picture, are said to give two of the finest screen performances of the year, as ‘ Baine” and “Chico” of the story. All of the foggy romantic atmosphere of the Paris Montmartre, where the story is laid, has been retained through expert lighting and photography in the picture—and all of the intimate and beautiful thoughts which made the play so great been kept through direction and interpretation. Frank Borzage, who directed the production, has achieved a masterpiece. It is a picture that cannot be too highly praised, according to the opinion of critics the world over. Besides the two principals the cast includes Gladys Brockwell. David Butler, Ben Bard, Emile Chautard, George Stone, Marie Mosquini, Albert Gran and Brandon Hurst. “Brums of Love,” the great D. W. Griffith picture starring Mary Philbin and Lionel Barrymore, will aljo be shown.
After a thorough preparation in } Europe for an operatic career. Mary ' Duncan, who plays the siren in the t Fox production “Four Devils,” found 1 that she could not get even minor roles , in American opera but was offered t many opportunities to play on the stage. Tired of breasting the current, she took a role in “The Shanghai Gesture.” which led to a small part 2 in the movies with Fox and stardom in less than a year.
