Obituary

MR. J. V. ROULSTON A former manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia in Perth, Western Australia, Mr. J. V. Roulston, has died in London. He was well-known in Auckland. He was prominent in Masonic circles and his funeral in London was concluded with Masonic rites. Mr. H. S. Roulston, of Auckland, is his brother. MR. ALEXANDER SCHOLES Mr. Alexander Scholes, who died at Epsom yesterday at the age of 62, was born at Belmont, Wellington but later went to the Toko district, Taranaki, where he engaged in farming. In 1902 he took up land at Hangatiki. in the King Country, living there until IS months ago. when he retired to Auckland.

Keenly interested in local affairs, Mr. Scholes was a prominent figure in the district. He was actively concerned in constituting the Waitomo County Council, and was a foundation member, becoming chairman in 1908 and occupying the position for about 10 years. He was also a member of the Waikato Hospital Board and the Waitara Licensing Committee. In 1914 he stood for Parliament for the Waikato seat in the interests of the Liberal Party, against Mr. J. A. Young. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Scholes is survived by his wife, one son. Mr. A. Scholes. of Te Kawa, and two daughters, Mrs. R. McLean, of Rangataua, and Mrs, J. Hoffman, of Hangatiki.
