MT. WELLINGTON ROAD BOARD

The Mount Wellington Road Board on Tuesday evening received advice from the Railway Department that after fully considering the board’s request, that the name of the railway station in the Mount Wellington district be altered from Panmure, it had been decided to adhere to its former decision, and the station will be known as Panmure. In reply to a letter from the Auckland Town-Planning Association, asking the board to make early negotiations for the widening of the portion of Great South Road, in its district, considered advisable on account of the increasing motor traffic, it was agreed to communicate with the owners of the land, on the eastern side of the road, which is at present undeveloped, and to ask them if they would consider setting back their boundary line 17ft. The Main Highways Board advised the board of the appointment of a traffic inspector to patrol the Great South Road. In the opinion of the board it was a move in the right direction, and it was agreed to render all possible assistance to the newly-appointed officer. A grant of a subsidy of £3 for £1 was authorised by the Main Highways Board toward the reconstruction of the bitumen shoulders on the Great South Road. The total estimated cost of the proposed work is £1,440. It was decided to proceed with the work as soon as the question of compensation with the Auckland Electric-Power Board for damage done to the Great South Road, while laying electric cables, has been finalised. The Public Works Department advised that the plans of the proposed work in connection with the railwaycrossing in Triangle Road would be submitted at an early date for consideration by the board.
