CAMBRIDGE SHOW

BIG INCREASE IN ENTRIES CREAM OF WAIKATO STOCK HIGH QUALITY EXHIBITS (From Our Own Correspondent) CAMBRIDGE, To-day. The Waikato Central Agricultural Association’s 26th annual show opened to-day in showery weather. The general prospects point to the show being another fine advertisement for this favoured primary producing district. The first show was held on March 5, 1904, at the present showgrounds, then called Central Park. Since then the annual fixture has been held regularly. It can justly lay claim to having played its part in lifting the Waikato district agriculturally from one of poor repute to the foremost in the country. The past presidents over the 26-year period are: The late Hon. John Fisher (10 years), Mr. Jas. Taylor (one year), Mr. Richard Reynolds (six years). Mr. N. Banks (three years), the present president, Mr. J. S. Fisher (six years). A review of the entries discloses a satisfactory position, the total being 1,122, against 1,102 last year, not including the horticulture and schools section.

Although the cattle entries are down a little on the previous year’s figures, the quality of the animals exhibited represents the cream of Waikato’s pedigree stock. Jerseys predominate, with 73 entries, against 70 last year; Friesians 56, against 57 last year; Ayrshires 45, against 67; pedigree milking and Shorthorns, 23, against 45. The horse entries are outstanding, being 371, against 350 last year. The draught horse and farmers’ sections are light. There is excellent competition among the hacks, with 126 entries against 115 last year. The home of the Waikato Hunt, hunters are always prominent at the Cambridge Show, though the total entry of 78 is less than last year. There is a considerable entry of fresh blood in the big events, there being such well-known performers as El Arish, Tui, Saunterer, Spark, Polite and many other prominent South Auckland horses.

The pig and sheep sections have been badly neglected. The arrangements of the show are excellent, reflecting great credit on the president, Mr. J. S. Fisher, and secretary, Mr. Edgar James, and the big band of stewards.
