ENGLAND BATS WELL

308 RUNS FOR THREE WICKETS

MELBOURNE GAME DRAWN (United r.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Tuesday. The cricket match, England v. Victoria, ended in a draw to-day at Melbourne. The game was concluded in delightful weather and on a good wicket. There were 3,500 spectators, and the receipts amounted to £l6l. The total receipts for the four days were £1,509. When stumps were drawn yesterday Victoria had made 572 runs in the first innings. Tlie visitors had responded with 303 in their first innings, and 51 for no wickets -in their second. When play was resumed England’s not-out men, Jardine (23) and Leyland (28) opened confidently. They scored freely off Ironmonger and Alexander. The last-mentioned bowler was veryfast, but pitched the ball too short and was pulled easily. Leyland reached his 50 by hitting one from Ironmonger over the boundary at square leg. It was a great stroke. The batsman had added only four to his total when he made a poor stroke and was caught at mid-off. Leyland had batted attractively for S 3 minutes and had hit one six and six fours.

Jardine reached his 50 after having batted 110 minutes, having added only 27 in an hour. When Hammond had scored four he made a half-hearted stroke off Makin ancl hit the ball uppishly toward Ryder at mid-off. It was a narrow escape. Hammond batted very slowly. He only made nine in 50 minutes. Alexander bowled much better after lunch. Hammond was very uncomfortable against him. When he had made 14 he tipped up a ball from Alexander and narrowly escaped being caught and bowled.

It is obvious that Hammond does not relish fast bowling. Alexander finally had him caught at cover point. He had batted 88 minutes and had hit two fours. The partnership had yielded 70 runs. Tyldesley commenced stylishly. Jardine played mainly on the defensive. He varied this with occasional leg hits to the fence. He made his sixth century of the tour after having batted 219 minutes. Finally, after 253 minutes’ batting Jardine was caught in trying to force the fast bowler, Alexander, to the on side. He had made 11 boundary strokes, mostl3 r on the on side, where lie is masterful. His partnership with Tyldesley yielded 79 runs. Tyldesley, who batted as confidently and as neatly as he did in the first innings, reached his 50 after 90 minutes. He was obviously trying hard for a place in the test match team. He batted 130 minutes and hit six fours. Hendren was in 53 minutes for 31, and hit on© four. Stumps were drawn at 5.35 p.m. on account of the bad light.
