BAD SMASH IN ALBERT STREET 4 THREE PEOPLE BADLY HUR| A man and a child of six are now in hospital seriously ill and another has a broken arm as the result of a motor accident in Albert Street yesterday afternoon, when a light five-seater car swung head-on into the end of the balustrade separating Albert Street from the narrow road opening on to Durham Street. r |UIE two passengers seriously m jured were Mr. John Stokes, married man, aged of, living at I' Beresford Street, and Athol Thomas, aged 6. Mrs. W. Thomas, of 17 Beresford Street, his mother, had one o£ her arms broken. The car was being driven up Albert Street by Mr. Sydney George Knight% of 10 Maxwell Avenue. Grey Lvnn. Mr. Stokes, was ill the front seat with hint and Mrs. Thomas and her sott were sitting in the hack. The car ha<l just passed the intersection ot Alberc Street when it struck the stone pillar at the end of the balustrade with great force. Mr. Stokes was thrown almost through the windscreen, pieces o£ which were scattered right across the road. He received cuts on his fax'* and a deep gash running from the top of the back of his head down to the shoulder blade. He lost a great deal of blood, aud his condition is nowvery serious. Mrs. Thomas and her sou in the’ back seat were almost thrown from the car. The boy received injuries to his neck, concussion and injuries to his tongue, which he bit completely through in the impact. His condition is also serious. Mrs. Thomas had an arm broken, but after receiving hos'. pital treatment was able to go home.

The driver, Mr. Knight, escaped with a cut 011 the mouth, although the steering wheel was twisted broken. The whole car was badly damaged. The front wheels were, smashed, the bonnet torn off and the radiator buckled. The injured people were taken to hospital by the St. John Ambulance, which was on the scenq less thaxx five minutes after the accident .
