STORY OF CRUELTY

WIFE SEEKS DIVORCE HUSBAND IN GAOL Hearing of evidence in the divorce suit, in which Honour Clarke McKenzie (Mr. Singer) sought release from Lawrence Mackenzie (Mr. Hickson), on grounds of habitual drunkenness and cruelty, occupied Mr. Justice Kennedy the Supreme Court all day yesterday. Petitioner alleged that her husband had frequently threatened to “do for” her and her children, and that he was continually drunk. Respondent said he had been drunk, at the most, three times in his life. He had never used bad language to her, and why she had left him he could suggest no reason. He had never threatened her life, he said, and denied assaulting her and causing her injury on the night of Hecember 29, 1927. Respondent -is now serving three years’ imprisonment for the assault, but claimed he did not know who had . injured his wife on that occasion.

His Honour said he would endeavour to give his decision to-morrow.
