BETRAYED BY VOICE

MUDDLED MAN WITH FALSE MOUSTACHE PROBATION FOR FORGERY (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Monday. Having pleaded guilty to a charge of forging and uttering a cheque at Morrinsville, a young man, Han O’Regan, appeared for sentence before Mr. Justice Blair, in the Hamilton Supreme Court to-day. Mr. E. McGregor, for accused, said accused took the cheque some weeks before he actually used it. About a week ago, while under the influence of drink, he went into a shop at Morrinsville and openly filled in a cheque with the name of a well-known farmer. At the time he was wearing what was palpably a disguise. Accused had picked up some hair in a barber’s shop and had placed it on his Ups, and had also put on a battered hat. He went across the road to another shop and uttered the cheque. The-shop assistant recognised the voice and asked accused to wait for the change, but he walked out of the shop. His Honour said the offence seemed to have been committed when accused w&s muddled with drink. He was a recent arrival in the 10 minion. He would be admitted to probation for three years with the special condition that he should abstain from liquor. He was also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, £2 11s.
