MECHANIC BURNED

PETROL LEAKS ON SHIRT BOY BADLY INJURED The vacuum tank of a car which was being repaired by Knowles Nilssen this, morning began to leak while he was at work, and the shoulder and back of his shirt became saturated with petrol. Suddenly it caught fire and Nilssen was very badly burned. The accident occurred about 11.30 this morning in the garage of Northern Automobiles, Limited, at the south end of Albert Street. Nilssen, who is an apprentice aged 16 and who lives at 85 Paice Avenue, Edendale,- was working on the engine of the car at the back of the garage. The flames suddenly flashed out, and before anyone could get to him he had been very badly burned from the shoulder down to the waist. Other men were working near him, and the St. John Ambulance was immediately sent for. He was rushed to the Auckland Hospital, where he is now lying dangerously ill. No reason can be given for the ignition of the petrol.
