NORTH SHORE WINS McILRAITH FOURS

INTER-CLUB ROWING SCULLS FOR AUCKLAND Two exciting finishes in both of which crews from the Auckland Club participated, were seen on the North Shore Rowing Club’s course on Saturday, when inter-club races for the McIlraith and Maurice Caro Cups were decided. Crews from the live city clubs, West End’s second string making six entrants, started in the Mcllraith Fours, when Shore and Auckland staged a rattling finish, with the latter crew coming up fast. Auckland and St. George’s ran away from the other three crews in the Maurice Caro Double Sculls, and these old rivals provided a great race until a length or so from the finish, when St. George’s failed. Waitemata did not enter for this event. Water conditions were ideal for both races. Mr. S. Butland was starter for the fours and Mr. J. Fleming for the Caro Cup race. Mr. G. Barrett was judge. The course for the Mcllraith Cup race was from the Stanley Bay Wharf to the club-house. The crews were: St. George’s.—C. D’Authreau (str), J. Duncan, D. R. MacGregor, S. Hislop (bow). Auckland.—J. Bygate (str), M. Barrett, J. McComish, A. Finn (bow). Waitemata. —D. Smith (str), M. Cruickshank, G. Barker, J. Stevenson (bow). West End No. I.—G. Conway (str), A. Lawrence, F. Conway, E. M. Taylor (bow). West End No. 2.—A. E. Payne (str), C. A. Norden, J- Dawes, V. MacFarlane (bow). North Shore.—W. Dean (str), M. McCallum, E. Korn, C. Olliver (bow). The crews left the start in a bunch and hung together for the first 20yds, when Shore went ahead, followed by St. George’s and West End No. 1, with the other three crews together a length or so back. Off the ferry wharf, St. George’s dropped back and Auckland came up to second a length behind Shore and West End was a similar distance behind Auckland in third position. The crews remained in this order until off Ventnor, where Bygate called on his men and Auckland commenced to overhaul the home crew. In a rattling finish Shore gained the verdict by a foot or two. West End No. 1 was a length back third and Waitemata, St. George’s and West End No. 2 finished in that order. MAURICE CARO CUP The Caro Cup sculls were decided on a course from the Sheerlegs to the boathouse. The crews were:—St. George’s: V. Hargreaves (str), M. Simons (bow). Auckland: G. Cleal (str). W. Eaddy (bow). West End No. 1: F. Conway (str), G. Conway (bow). West End No. 2: A. E. Payne (str). A. C. Norden (bow). North Shore: W. Dean (str), M. McCallum (bow). From the start Auckland and St. George’s cleared away from the rest of the field and were level off the vehicular ferry wharf, with West End No. 1 several lengths back, third. Later Auckland was leading St. George’s by three-quarters of a length. West End No. 1 and North Shore were fighting for third place, half a dozen lengths back, with West End No. 2 well out of the picture. A great battle ensued, but St. George’s petered out several yards from the finish* leav-

ing Auckland to win by one and a-half [ lengths. West End No. 1 was third, followed by Shore and West End No. 2 at fairly long intervals.
