LITTLE GIRL DROWNED
FELL FROM CLIFF AT SHELLY BEACH Shortly after two o’clock yesterday afternoon, Giadys May Crowley, aged 10, fell from a cliff at Shelly Beach, Pcnsonby, and was drowned. The girl, who lived with her parents in Virginia Avenue, Eden Terrace, went to the beach with a brother and a friend. When searching lor a place where they could sit down she disappeared. and a little later the body was seen in the water near the foot of the cliff, having apparently fallen about 20ft. Members of the Ponsonby Life-Saving Club applied artificial respiration. and Dr. H. F. Holmden, of Ponsonby, was called, but the efforts proved fruitless. In the fall the child evidently struck her head and it is believed that this accounted for no call for assistance being heard. The place where the fatality occurred was at the corner of Point Erin Park, facing the upper harbour, a point which is hidden from the baths and beach. An inquest was opened before Mr. W. R. McKean this morning, and after evidence of identification had been taken, was adjourned.
