MR. WILKIE’S AMBITION

GREAT SHAKESPEARIAN WORK HAS PRODUCED 26 PLAYS Mr. Allan Wilkie, the Shakespearian actor-manager, has now produced 26 of the 37 plays, and leaks forward to the time when he will break the record of 31 productions that was made at Sadler’s Wells Theatre over 70 years ago. Mr. Wilkie, during a season which opens this evening, will produce “Coriolanus ’ and “All’s Well that Ends Well,” plays which have never before been produced in the city. “King Lear,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” and “Henry V.,” which are also in the repertoire, have not been produced for the past 25 years. “The fact that these plays are less frequently seen than others does not denote that they lack entertaining qualities,” said Mr. Wilkie, “but they are less in favour with actor-managers because, with the exception of ‘Coriolanus,’ there are no outstanding parts.”

Coming with a strengthened company, Mr. Wilkie says his productions now are more ambitious in staging and lighting than ever before. “I have been making advances all the time,” he said.
