BIG HOUSE DESTROYED
BLAZE AT MT. WELLINGTON EXPLOSION IN CUPBOARD A large nine-roomed wooden dwelling. owned and occupied' by Mr. G. V. Clare, on Barrick Hill. Mount Wellington, was totally destroyed by lire yesterday. During the preparation of the midday meal a maid heard two reports from the direction of the electric switchboard, ancTon the cupboard being opened flames burst out. Mr. Clare wrenched tho switchboard from the wall, and extinguished the flames in. Jhc vicinity, but not before they had penetrated the wall, and got beyond liis reach. No fire-fighting facilities were available in the neighbourhood, and on the arrival of the Ellerblie Fire Brigade the flames had the upper hand. Fnrniture to tho value of approximately £IOO was saved by the owner and neighbours. Falling tiles from the roof made the Work very risky. A bucket brigade managed to save an outbuilding. The house was erected about two years ago, and was insured in the Ocean Office lor £2,000, and the furniture was covered by a policy for £l,lOO in tho South British Insurance Company.
