FOR HOSPITAL SITE

MRS. CAUGHEY SMITH’S OFFER EXTENDING ST. HELENS Realising that there is need for a larger St. Helens Hospital, Mrs. Marian Caughey Smith has offered a site at Ellerslie for a new hospital. The site, which is two-thirds of an acre, adjoins the Alexandra Convalescent Home, which Mrs. Caughey Smith and her late husband, Mr. William H. Smith, presented to the city. The necessity for more accommodation at St. Helens Hospital was impressed upon the Minister of Health last December, when a deputation from the Society for Protection of Women and Children waited upon him.

It was then agreed that it would be unwise to make extensions on the present site in Pitt Street, because of its nearness to a busy street. The Minister, who announced his intention of consulting with the Hospital Board, has been told of Mrs. Caughey Smith’s offer of a new site.
