RICH MAN FROM NORFOLK
HASTINGS WELCOMED HIM (Special to THE SUN) HASTINGS, To-day. j There recently came to Hastings a young man of prepossessing appearance and manner named Victor Milton Rowlands, who claimed to own a plantation at Norfolk Island. He was invited to address the Rotary Clubs at Hastings and Napier, and being a clever and attractive speaker, succeeded in persuading business men of both towns that the island was a perfect heaven on earth, and was beseiged with inquiries. In the Hastings Police Court yesterday Row land was charged with obtaining credit by fraud and incurring a liability of £8 15s to the proprietress of the Ranfurly Hotel at Hastings by representing that he owned a plantation at Norfolk Island, and was a qualified solicitor. The prosecution also stated that he claimed to have received a bank draft from the island and that the firm of Williams and Kettle held £SOO for him. Accused, who was not represented by counsel, on the request of the police was remanded till March 6, to allow inquiries to be made outside Hastings. Bail was allowed in a bond of £IOO self, and a security of £2OO.
