OLDEST MAORI DIES
RACED I N EARLY ’BO’S FORMER ALL-ROUND ATHLETE (From Our Own Correspondent J KAITAIA, To-day. A very old Maori, Job Toamia, claimed to be New Zealand’s oldest native, died at Pamapuria on Wednesday night, aged 105. He was well known in racing circles in the 80’s, when he owned some of the best racers between Kawakawa and North Cape. He was a great athlete in his early days, being a champion boxer, wrestler and runner. At one time he was a seaman in one of the old-time whalers, later rising to the rank of first mate. He was once shipwrecked off Cape Karikari, and was one of the five survivors from a crew of 10.
