MISSING COUNCIL CHEQUES LACK OF SUPERVISION Press Association GREYMOUTH, To-day. i At the Supreme Court yesterday, Dennis Costello was charged with having. between April S and Augu C2. 1928, committed theft of cheques of a total value of £283 2s 3d. which .vere ir. his possession as a clerk to the Gres County Council. For the prsecution it was said that an auditor found a shortage of £i2 12s 3d, no explanation of which was forthcoming. No entries of the money had been made in the cash book. It was not alleged that the accused stole the cheques, as they were paid into the cash-box and into the bank, i but that he had abstracted money from I the c ash-box for which he should have aC For n t t ht accused, Mr. C. S Thomas, of Christchurch, argued that theie was evidence of a lack of sufficient supervlifon, and said that the office was not run strictly enough.
