RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“PHYLLIS OF THE FOLLIES”
The sophisticated screen comedy. “Phyllis of the Follies,” which will be shown this evening at the Rialto and Regent (Epsom) Theatres, is a riotous round of rollicking situations, a relief from slapstick comedy. This one depends on perfectly natural yet charmingly ludicrous situations for its amusement, and it gets more deep laughs than pie slinging iind messing up things generally. One might call this a clean comedy, although it is almost naively sophisticated.
Matt Moore shares the stellar honours with Miss Day and adds much to the humour of the story. To the seductive Lilyan Tashraan goes a large part of the comedy honours. She is both perfectly cast and perfectly at home in her role.
Edmund Burns gains new laurels as the young lover whose weakness is any Follies girl, until he finds the Follies girl in the person of Miss Day. Duane Hhompson, while her role is small, adds much to the comedy in a brief trial sequence in which she wins her heart balm from Burns. "The Crash,” a thrilling railway story, starring Milton Sills, will also be shown.
Clara Bow will be seen in a new series of Paramount productions during 1929. Following on "The Fleet’s In” is “Three Week Ends,” recently completed at the Paramount studios. Other pictures listed are ‘‘The Wild Party,” and "The Saturday Night Kid.”
