Wireless to the New York “Times.”J Received 11 a.m. BAY OF WHALES, Tuesday, j Commander Byrd received a mess- ; age from Captain Neilson. of tlie •whaler C. A. Larsen, advising that it j will be safe for the Eleanor Boling to reach the Bay of Whales as late as March 4; but Byrd, believing the ice was coming earlier this year, is fearful that the ship may be caught and frozen in, and destroyed. It is for this reason that he sent the City of New York back, and he is also prepared to order the Eleanor Boling to return without landing here if the conditions are too menacing.
The Boling’s cargo could be brought next spring by one of the whaling ships. Three wild cheers for those going home were given by the men ashore, then three sounded from the ship as the City of New York slipped into the drifting mist to fight her way through the ice and the winds on her long trip back to New Zealand —a trip as difficult and beset with dangers as was the journey down.
