SURPRISED AT POPE
N.Z. ROTARIANS GOVERNOR’S STATEMENT Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The seventh annual conference of Rotary clubs was opened to-day, when delegates were welcomed by the Mayor, Mr. J. K. Archer. The District Governor, Sir Alexander Roberts, in the course of his address, referred to the Papal announcement recently published. It had caused the greatest surprise to all Rotarians in this country. The movement cared nothing for either creed or politics. In every club there were many religions and all creeds working together with one object. It would be a great disaster if anything occurred to upset the harmony at present existing. In his own club in Wellington, he could not tell the religion of one quarter of the members, any more than their political leanings. It was a great pity that the question should ever have been raised, and he hoped that the 53rd district would be kept quite clear of it.
