A FIRM MARKET

Auckland Wool Sale

WELLINGTON PRICES RULE

THE second Auckland sale of 1928-29 wool-selling season finished shortly after noon to-day. The catalogue of 28,214 bales was a record one for the centre.

Although, as was expected, prices were well below those ruling at the first sale held here toward the end of November, the market was firm on levels established in Wellington last week. At times prices were even slightly better when the quality of the wool was taken into consideration.

The quality of the offering generally was not the best. In addition to there being a fair percentage of log-stained and seedy lots, buyers complained that the classing was well below standard, especially In regard to backcountry clips. The general quality of the offering was not up to that seen at most recent Southern sales. Fine wools were well in the minority and, as a result America, Japan, and even buyers for New Zealand mills, were less active than at the November fixture. Only twice was 20d

exceeded, once for a lot of Merino wool that was passed in at 2.1 d. and another time for a lot of 11 bales of super slipe lialf-bred wool, on ac-

count of the Farmers’ Freezing Company, which was passed in at 20id. There was a fairly large entry of lambs’ wool which found France a strong buyer. Bradford and Germany were the biggest buyers of the sale, the former, as usual, concentrating largely on the better grades of crossbreds. Germany took a big weight of the medium wools. Belgium also took an appreciable weight of the offering. Bidding opened on Saturday evening with a bench of approximately 75 buyers, and although they were not all operating, a wide range of buying points were represented throughout, and there was little irregularity in the market. At times passings were fairly common, especially toward the middle of the sale this morning, but this was largely the result of sellers placing limits well above brokers’ valuations. SOME OF THE TOP PRICES Brands securing top prices for the various descriptions of wool included the following: Waiti; ibred Merino, passed at 21 d. MIC over Maraetai: Merino ewes and wethers, lSid. Ruku: Lambs, IS^d. Ngaheia: Lambs," 19d. FK over Orere: 19d. Mangatangi: A C’dale, 18Jd. Rehia: X-bred Ewe A. lS*d. JTH over Temini: Lincoln, 13d. PB over Mairoa and Lincoln, 13d. LA and Coy over Waiheke: Superfine xbred 19d. OFFICIAL REVIEW The Auckland Wool Brokers’ Association reports that over 90- per cent, of the catalogue was sold under the hammer. Continental buyers were a very material factor in the sale, their purchases representing over 50 per cent, of the lots sold. “It was fortunate for growers that the Continent was operating so freely as the class of wool submitted was of the qualities they were chiefly interested in, the clips this year showing the effects of last year’s drought and the bush fires that followed, consequently very little super wool was offered. As usual at this sale there was a large proportion of lambs’ wool offered the bulk of which was carrying a fair percentage of seed. Any fine lines of lambs realised extremely satisfactory prices, coarse lambs not being so keenly competed for.’’ The catalogues in the order of sale were: Dalgety and Co., Ltd., and North Auckland Farmers’ Co-op., Ltd. in conjunction, 9,421 bales. Abraham and "Williams, Ltd., 4,097 bales. A. Buckland and Sons, Ltd., 2,015 bales. Farmers’ Co-op. Auct. Co., Ltd., 5,931 bales. N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., 6,750 bales.
