TWO FOR AUCKLAND
DOMINION ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS TAURANGA MAN’S FiNE WIN (Special to THE SUN) PICTON, Saturday. Two rowing championships go to the Auckland province following the regatta held here to-day. Hamilton, who won the senior four in the 1924-25 season, scored a victory, capturing the event again to-day. The result was reported in Saturday’s Sun. Turner recorded a fine performance in placing Tauranga among the. list of champions for the first time by winning the singles in strong company. Jackson and Traill, last year’s winners, retained their double sculling title in fine style, providing too good for older and more experienced opponents, I. St. Clair and Molesworth (Hamilton). Cooke and Williams (Star, Wellington) won the champion pairs.
Good starts were the order of the day, and races were all exciting. Public interest was keen, and in every way the regatta was a success.
The water was slightly jobbled for the singles. Turner (Tauranga) won a great race by six inches, sculling beautifully. St. Clair and Tarrant were three lengths back. Turner’s was a great achievement, as he beat the champion in spite of catching two crabs.
Jackson was the first away, but Turner took a length and a-half lead after they had gone 100yds. St. Clair was then close up third, with Molesworth, Tarrant, and Hereford further back. On completing the first halfmile Jackson and Turner were almost on level terms with St. Clair, five lengths back, and Tarrant and Molesworth the same distance behind these two.
Hereford withdrew owing to his inability to cope with the jobbled water. With only half a mile to go the leaders were still even. Both were sculling very freely. Jackson seemed to be getting the more powerful stroke, but Turner’s recovery was better.
At this stage Tarrant challenged St. Clair for third position, and the race continued as duels between Union and Tauranga, and Picton and Hamilton No. 1.
About 300 yards from home Turner caught a crab, but recovered well. Both he and Jackson then increased their rate of striking, Turner taking a length’s lead, which lie lost when he caught a crab near the post. After another fine recovery he just managed to hold an advantage of six inches at the finish. It was the closest championship sculling race for years. St Clair staved off Tarrant for third place.
The crews went out to start for the champion pairs at 1.30 p.m., but owing to the roughness of the water the race was postponed until 5 p.m. Results:
