Two Points Ahead
STEADY HARBOUR BOARD Suburban Cricket F ortunes NOW two points ahead in the Suburban Cricket Association's senior A competition, Harbour Board, last season's winning team, seems likely to remain ahead. Ponsonby. which led earlier in the season, is second team and Green Lane, which has been lighting hard all the season, is third. At the Domain on Saturday, Harbour Board scored a three-point win over Glen Eden, and Green Lane scored a three-pointer over Ellerslie.
Taken generally, the play was poor. Scores were not outstanding, but one century was registered. This was to Eric Watts, the young Green Lane player, who carried on from the previous Saturday to finish up unbeaten at 11%. His score substantially contributed to Green Lane’s win. Dunning, bowling for Harbour Board established something in the way of a bowling feat ■when he took four of Glen Eden’s wickets for seven runs. Against Victoria, which played disappointingly, Ponsonby won easily enough by ten wickets. SIMPLE WIN GREEN LANE SCORES ERIC WATTS’S CENTURY In a dull round of cricket, Green Lane emerged an easy victor against Ellerslie, which displayed another show of lack-interest. Green Lane was at a sound crease in the early afternoon to finish its first innings. Eric Watts immediately became active and it was not long before he had passed the 100 mark in
; slashing style. McGregor gave him good assistance and both batsmen scored heavily with leg shots. Green Lane’s first innings yielded 240, against ' Ellerslie’s first innings effort of 'lB9. , The remainder of the afternoon was left to the Laners to do their best for a three-point win. They did it in good time. Gedye and Matthews were stumbling blocks early in the piece, and it seemed : that Ellerslie would pile up a big score. 1 After hitting two lusty sixes, Gedye • went out at 51 and Matthews was clean-bowled by Seccombe when he had knocked up an excellent 56. It was the beginning of the end. The remaining Ellerslie batsmen fell [ simple victims to Seccombe’s tempti ing deliveries and the innings closed l for 124 runs. Gedye and Matthews l had scored all but 17 of the runs and : Mr. Extras had contributed six. Three ' of the Ellerslie men were absent for ■ the second innings, otherwise a dif--5 ferent tale might have been told. ' Much of the same occurrence cost : Ellerslie another match earlier in the 1 season.' For all that, Ellerslie has worked into fourth place and is ahead of Victoria, which has slipped back astonish ingly. It was Green Lane’s game in every way. Details: GREEN LANE First Innings. C.
