Press AssociationJ ?' 5 ain ' DELHI, Sunday. pLAVE importance is attached to Amanullah’s departure >* from Kandahar for Herat, which is the nearest big Afghan town to the Russian frontier, and which is the Soviet’s internal political base in Afghanistan. The “Statesman’s” political correspondent at New Delhi regards Amanullah’s move as the most serious yet met with in the Afghan situation.

The correspondent says it may lead to a crisis that will overshadow the general election. in England, and dwarf most of ollr preoccupations iu India.

The Soviet Consulate at Herat was recently a centre of propaganda for Am arm 11 ah. It is believed the former King has gone to invoke the support of the Soviet, which makes no secret

of the fact that Amaiiullah stands for revolution, and has her sympathy. The situation is regarded as fraught with explosive possibilities.
