LED PARTY TO SCOTT
CAPTAIN ATKINSON DEAD (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) LONDON, Thursday. The death has occurred of SurgeonCaptain Edward Leicester Atkinson, who led the expedition that found the late Captain Scott and his companions, who died in the Antarctic in 1912. Surgeon-Captain Edward Leicester Atkinson was born in 1882, and educated at Forest School and St. Thomas’s Hospital. He was for thee years in the Antarctic, and brought back Captain Scott’s records and his last diary. He led the relief party from the Discovery. He served with the Grand Fleet in the war, and was with the Royal Naval Division at Gallipoli. He later served with the North Russian Expeditionary Force. He has written medically on the fly pest at Gallipoli; and he wrote an official narrative of the Scott Expedition, and scientific records of his experiences. He was awarded the Albert Medal in 1918, for heroic rescue work when the monitor Glatton, laden with explosives, caught fire off Dover and was toi'pedoed to save that town.
