STRONG, BUT UNPOPULAR
FASCIST GRIP ON ITALY GREAT MILITARY POWER (United Service) LONDON, Thursday. The special correspondent of the “Daily News” qA Rome states that the Fascist autocracy is more firmly established and more disliked than at any time since the famous march on Rome. The chief source of its strength is the Blackshirt Militia, which has reached a high pitch of efficiency. With 25,000 officers and 300,000 men it effiicently ensures the safety of Fascism. Italy has no alternative but to acquiesce. Yet, except from professional Fascists, this acquiescence is reluctant and morally valueless. The people resent the constant pressure to make them live in accordance with Fascist principles. The muzzling of the Press is the biggest blunder the Fascist regime has made, because there is now a universal disbelief in Italy of anything Fascist. The people feel that Fascism has ndt “delivered the goods,” and that a despotism in the 20th century has not proved practicable.
However, it is clear that Signor Mussolini will remain Italy’s unchallenged master as long as he desires.
