BRITISH TRADE BALANCE
THE VALUE OF SHIPPING (Australian and K.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Friday. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, president of the Board of Trade, at a dinner of the Chamber of Shipping, disclosed that the Board of Trade estimate of last year’s trade balance gave £150,000.000 on the credit side. The ‘’Daily Telegraph” points out that toward this substantial surplus the shipping industry contributed £130,000,000. There could scarcely be a more striking or more definite proof of the value of the Merchant Service. Its welfare must have a prime interest for any Government, as its earnings help to pay for the food and raw materials we must buy from abroad.
