It was a splendid race and the water was perfect. Time, 11.33 4-5. After an even start Hamilton came . t), e front rowing a faster stroke, •nw excellent conditions resulted in a display of blade work of a very high standard in all crews. Union, rowing a slower stroke, was next to Hamilton at the first half-mile, thm came Picton and Queen's Drive, with Wairau last “by a mile.” Hamilton, rowing 30 strokes to the niinute, had one and a-half lengths’ lead on Picton, which was rowing well m second place. Wairau and Union a ere then lighting for third position, the latter having come up well. Wainiu’s effort was short-lived, and Union, increasing its rate, improved ns position by one and a-half lengths, leaving Wairau and challenging Picton. Picton staved off the North Island ,-rew till the last half-mile, when Union, rowing with great dash, went into second position, and began to Hamilton. The finish was thrilling, both Hamilton and Union showing splendid oarsmanship. and when the gun went only three feet separated the two. Even spaces of about two lengths separated Union, Picton, Wairau and Queen’s Drive. LIGHT-WEIGHT MAIDEN FOURS I mile Blenheim (S. Phillips, C. Hoffman, f. Lane, R. Patchett), 1. Avon was second and Picton third. The only starters. Won by a length fend a-half. Time, 6.3 3-5.
