CONCILIATION COUNCIL

MILK ROUNDSMEN’S DISPUTE COQKS AND STEWARDS TOO The hearing of the dairy workers’ dispute (milk roundsmen section) was commenced by the Conciliation Council on Tuesday last, before the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. P. Hally. The applicants were the union of workers, and the respondents the various milk companies. Assessors for the applicants were Messrs. A. McGarry, S. Mitchell, and T. Doherty; the employers’ assessors being Messrs. T. PI. Chapman, R. O. Smith, and F. W. Stonex. Mr. J. Purtell appeared as agent for the union of workers, with Mr. G. E. Wright acting in a similar capacity for the employers. A number of clauses were held over, including those relating to wages, number of days a week, number of hours a day, and some minor items, an adjournment of the council being made till this morning to give the parties an opportunity of discussing these questions. When the council resumed this morning, very little progress was made, and at the lunch adjournment no agreement had been reached on the wages and hours question. COOKS' DISPUTE The cooks and stewards’ dispute was taken by the council yesterday, before the Conciliation Commissioner. The Federated Cooks and Stewards’ Union of Workers were the applicants, and the Kaipara and Sellars-Allen Shipping Companies the respondents. The assessors for the union were Messrs. E. Kennedy (Wellington), E. Lee (Auckland), and A. Pyman Auckland). Captain R. C. Hammond and Messrs. PI. G. Menzies and S. E. Wright appeared as assesosrs for the shipping companies. Many points of dispute were settled during the meeting, but the question of hours and wages had to be deferred owing to the number of disputes of a similar nature receiving the attention of the Arbitration Court in respect to those questions in the South.
