STEWART GIVES UP
ROAD RECORD ATTEMPT BREWIN PEDALS ON (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON, To-day. The cyclist, J. C. Stewart, who started from Auckland at 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday in an attempt to break the road record to Wellington of 73 hours, at present held by Sutherland, was compelled to terminate his ride at Otaki. He came on to Wellington this morning. Altogether Stewart was on the road 49£ hours, but some of this time was spent resting. He is not quite clear as to how much time was so spent. He had one sleep at Ngaruawahia. He states that the roads in many places are very bad. He did not think lie would attempt another record over metalled roads controlled by the Main Highways Board. H. G. Brewin, who started at 1 a.m. on Wednesday, also on an attempt to break the record, heard at Te Ivuiti that Stewart was ahead of him, but did not catch, him until last evening on the other side of Foxton. Stewart states that Brewin should reach Wellington about 2 o’clock this afternoon, judging by the pace he had been travelling. Pie also says that Brewin has been riding mechanically, and told him he could not remember what happened between Waitara and Wanganui. The weather had been good all the way.
