STRICKEN COALFIELDS

SUFFERERS DETERIORATE IN PFIYSIQUE AN ALARMING REPORT (Australian and A r .Z. 2*tcss Association) LONDON, Thursday. The Ministry of Health has issued a. grave report concerning the conditions on the coalfields in Wales. This says the effects of prolonged poverty are becoming increasingly notict'able on the health of men, women and children. A general deterioration in the physique of the sufferers is in sight. The situation is unparalleled in modern history. The nearest approach to it was during the cotton famine of 1862-4. Discussing the destructive effect of idleness upon character and morals, the authors of the report say they are more struck by the depression, listlessness and hopelessness of the unemployed miners than by their actual privations. Work is needed by the men even more than food or clothes. The Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, is to meet the executive of the Miners’ Federation on March 5 to discuss the position on the coalfields. A British official wireless message says the fund of the Lord Mayor of London for the relief of distress on the coalfields now approaches a total of £700,000. This will be increased to £1,400,000 by the Government's pound for pound subsidy. The amount already distributed exceeds £432,000.
