WELLINGTON CRICKET COMPETITION PROVIDES CLOSE AND KEEN TUSSLE
The Wellington cricket championship at the end of the first round is in a most interesting position, quite a number of changes having taken place during the last few games. Wellington at
one time was in a strong position at the head of the table. Slowly, but
surely, however, the fortune of war have gone against it. Once in the lead, Wellington now has to be content with second place, equal with Midland. Old Boys are at the head of the list with .15 points, then follow Midland 13, Wellington 13, University 11, Institute 11, Petone 11, Kilbirnie, and Hutt 6. With only four points separating six teams it is quite evident that the closing matches will be most interesting. If only Institute was as strong in attack as in defence, there seems to be little doubt that this team would come out the eventual winner, as it did last year, but the bowling is by no means what it was, even though it still includes Henderson and Massey. The Wellington Gricket Association has decided that only two further rounds of matches shall bo played, but should two teams be then in the lead, those teams will play off. It is expected that the matches will be quite interesting, and provided Old Boys can maintain the excellence of their play they should continue to hold their present position at the top of the list, even though strongly challenged by Institute.
