UNIMPROVED VALUES
EXEMPTION OF FARM LANDS
Lively while it lasted, a debate on the exemption of farm lands from the provisions of rating upon unimproved values took place at last night’s meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council.
Messrs. A. H. and E. Brett and J. Paterson applied to the council for the passing of a resolution under section 8 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1928, to the effect that all the land occupied by them is, and has been, previously occupied for farming purposes. The finance and legal commitee recommended that such resolution be passed. Cr. J. Guiniven protested that this was merely a move to undermine and j defeat the unimproved values hasis. It would mean that every person with i over three acres of land would make J similar application. The fact that the j Mesrs. Bretts’ land had been surveyed and subdivided years ago made the matter worse.
The Mayor: That old subdivision has lapsed on account of staleness. The matter is merely the result of an operation of Parliament.
Cr. Guiniven: No, it is the result of the operations of those around this table.
The debate will doubtless be continued at a special meeting to be held next Wednesday.
