PARK FOR TAKAPUNA
MRS. CAUGHEY-SMITH’S GIFT
At last night’s meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Williamson) announced that advice had been received that Mrs. Marion Caughey-Smith was desirous of presenting to the borough, for the purposes of a public p. -rk, a of land with an area of a little ever an acre, situated at Bayswater. The land was purchased by Mrs. CaugheySmith in 1913 for the sum of £1,700.
The gift was almost unconditional, a stipulation being that it be named Quinton Park, after the birthplace of the mother of the donor. It was further suggested that the council should undertake to commence the lay-out of the area within four months of acceptance.
The land under offer of gift is situated in Marine Terrace, and lies to th© westward of the upward slope from the Bayswater wharf, being just above the clubhouse of the Takapuna Boating Club. There is a grove of pohutukawas and pines upon the property.
Many appreciative references to the public spirit shown by Mrs. CaugheySmith were made by councillors, and th© proffered trust was accepted with thanks.
Mrs. Caughey-Smith’s name has been associated with several public gifts in and around Auckland. Among others, are the Alexandra Convalescent Home at Ellerslie; the Methodist orphanage at Mount Albert; and the hospital wing and chapel at the Paerata Methodist College. Some of these were given in conjunction with the late Mr. A. C. Caughey, a brother of the donor of the new park at Bayswater.
