AUCKLAND WINS 1929 SANDERS CUP AVALON HOME BY 48SEC (Special to THE SUN) AKAROA, To-day. By defeating the Wellington representative by 48 seconds, Avalon, the Auckland challenger, won the sixth race in the Sanders Cup contest, sailed here yesterday, and so takes the trophy back to Auckland, after its absence in the South for four years. Avalon has won three races, Clyde (Wellington) two, and Eileen (Otago) When the race was due to start there was a flat calm, and the start was delayed for two hours. The course was a triangular one. On completion of the first round, the times were: Avalon, 1.12.10; Clyde, 1.13.15; Eileen, 1.15.22. Colleen (Canterbury) retired before the round was completed. The second round was completed by Avalon 50sec ahead of Clyde, with Eileen smin behind. The finish was a splendid sight, as Avalon came along, with Clyde pressing close behind, the two boats being escorted by a fleet of nine launches. The finishing times were: Avalon, 2.30.30; Clyde, 2.31.18. Eileen, which had been coming up well, did not cross the finishing line. The presentation of the cup and miniature to the Auckland crew was made at a smoke concert last evening by the Alayor, Mr. G. Armstrong, who also presented trophies won in the local regattg, including a cash prize of £lO to Eileen (Otago), winner of the 14-footer championship. Avalon was built in 1925 by C. Bailey and Sons at Auckland for Mr. F. Cloke. In the contest held in Dunedin in February, 1926, in which she represented Auckland, she was defeated by Betty for the cup after very close racing. In February, 1927, Avalon represented Hawke’s Bay in Lyttelton, and, securing one win, qualified for the races. Last year Avalon represented Auckland at SteAvart Island, and was again runner-up for the cup.
NORTHCOTE REGATTA PROGRAMME FINALISED Further arrangements for the annual No.rthcote-Birkenhead regatta were made at a committee meeting last evening under the presidency of Mr. A. V. Tyer. The programme will be on the lines of last year’s regatta with the addition of two races for outboards over a three-mile course.
For these events Mr- F. G. Fawcett will be official starter and Mr. J. Wilson handicapper. The yachting races will be held off the Northcote Wharf, and the starters will be Messrs A. V. Tyer and J. T. Fearnley. Mr. W. A. Wilkinson will act as timekeeper and Messrs. C. E. Campbell and G- R. Hutchinson as judges. The handicappers are Messrs. J. Dickson, B. Mayall, A. Clark, T. McKnight, N. J. Campbell and A. V. Tyer. The sailing committee comprises Messrs. A. Clare, A. V. Tyer, N. J. Campbell, K. R. Taylor, A. Couldray and A. Clark.
The side-show events will be held at Hinemoa Park, Birkenhead Wharf, on the following Saturday, March 9. A long-distance swimming race, from Northcote Wharf to Birkenhead Wharf, will be a feature of the programme. Messrs. W. Hurley and K. Taylor will act as judges, and Messrs. A. Clare and A. Clark as starters. The Birkenhead Band will play a musical programme. Entries close on Monday evening.
