MELBOURNE MAN FOUND GUILTY AND SENTENCED TO DEATH

(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. noon. MELBOURNE, To-day. Tliomas Bacon, aged 37, was found guilty of the murder of Mrs. D. Ledger. The jury entered a recommendation to mercy, but he was sentenced to death.

The murder, a shocking one, was committed in a block of flats at East Melbourne on the morning of November 30. Mrs. Ledger’s throat was cut and she had deep wounds on her chest.

The woman’s young son made a valiant attempt to save his mother. Mrs. Ledger occupied a flat in the building with her son, a college boy. The latter heard his mother scream and rushed into her room. There he saw a man killing his mother. The boy seized the man’s head and pushed it back. He also thrust a linger down the , assailant’s throat, but could not prevent him achieving his fell purpose. The distracted lad then rushed away to get a pea-rifle, but he could not. find any cartridges. Bacon was discovered in a side lane. He had a deep cut in his throat and another on one of his wrists.
