Te Aroha Opens Record Fixture

MOSQUE AND GLENSTAR SURPRISE

ARECOKD attendance that taxed the lawn accommodation to the utmost, and an increase of totalisator receipts, were registered by the Te Aroha Jockey Club on the occasion of the opening of its annual two-day fixture at Herriesville on Saturday.

The climatic conditions were almost ideal, and the course in excellent order. It was an enjoyable day’s sport, marred to a certain extent by thi?k dust nuisance, and the fact that all the events started late, half an hour being lost on the eight races. The totalisator handled £31,701 10s, an increase of £2,183 10s on last year’s figures, £29,518. In the principal event the form at Rotorua worked out splendidly, Mosque defeating The Lover comfortably, with Royal Doulton a moderate third. Apparently the Rotorua results were not assessed at their true value* for The Lover, winner of the Cup there the previous Saturday, had been penalised 21b only, whereas the impost on Mosque was not altered. Both these horses were at fine prices on Saturday. The favourite, In the Shade, ran fairly well under difficulties, and he should be all the better for that outing. Glenstar defeated Pegaway in the sprint in a thrilling finish, this race marking the exit of Jolly Money, who fell and brought down Tea Time and Macroom, the three-year-old having to be destroyed. The Champion 'Hack Cup saw Black Maire lead all the way, and making the third success scored by Te Arohatrained horses. Prince Lu was in front from start to finish in the Hot Springs Handicap, Ti Tree being the only one to get near him at the judge. Notes on the racing and details of result?! follow: Ruakaka Hurdles Second in the order of betting, Gala Bay made no race of the Ruakaka Hurdles, going to the front fit the start and staying there. Ripon Abbey £584, was the favourite, with good support for the Gala Day-Boomerday bracket £514, and Highflown £479. The second horse, Ramblin’ Kid, was entrusted with £358. There was a delay at the start and when they were eventually let go Ripon Abbey received the worst of the despatch, while Gala Bay immediately went to the front and led past the stand clear of Berinthia, Boomsrday, Highflown, Ramblin’ Kid. Ah Wera, Odin and Star of the East.

Ripon Abbey crashed at the first fence, and after clearing this obstacle Brundee Boy was pulled up. Passing the six furlong post Gala Bay was out clear of Berinthia, who was four lengths ahead of Odin, Highflown and Ramblin’ Kid, the last three being on terms. Gala Bay was still doing it nicely at the turn, where he had an advantage over Berinthia. Ramblin' Kid, Star of the East, Boomcrda. and Odin, and from there on the pacemaker had no difficulty in winning by three and a-half lengths from Ramblin’ Kid, who beat Berinthia by two lengths. Star of the East was fourth, followed by Boomerday, Odin and Highflown. Waitoa Handicap A big field lined up for the Waitoa Handicap, backers pinning their faith to Bold Archer £739, Sir Mond £719, Prince of Orange £ 605, and Crown Arch £3G4. When they had settled down Camp Prince had charge from Red Lion and Crown Arch and as the field raced down the back Red Lion took command, his nearest attendant being Crown Arch, Camp Prince, Terrapeen, Archette, Blue Bonnet and Sir Mond. The last-named, Prince of Orange (slow to begin), and Archette improved their positions crossing the top, and this was the only change in the order. Red Lion was still bowling along at the head of affairs nearing the bend, with Crown Arch, Archette, Sir Mond, Terrapeen, Prince of Orange and Bold Archer (wide out), following. Crown Arch caught the leader in nice time and went on to win by a length and a-quarter from Sir Mond. Prince of Orange was three parts of a length further back, and following him were Red Lion, Terrapeen, Te Waka, Camp Prince and Ruby Dawn. Juvenile H andicap Polyxena, the stable selection, backers had no hesitation in putting it on, and the Takanini representative wound up with £1,319, next best backed being Love Call £451, Gay Duke £323, and Awamutu £312. The last-named began best and led over the early stages from Polyxena, Love Call. Valstreet, Flying Prince, Gay Duke and Valreina. Moving across the top 1 olyxena, Awamutu and Love Call were on terms, .four lengths clear of Valstreet. with Valreina, Gay Duke and Flying Prince following. They turned for home in this order, the favourite who was on the rails, winning handsomely by half a length from Awamutu, who beat Gay Duke by three parts of a length. Love Cal] was right up fourth, and then came Flying Prince, Valstreet, Valreina, Motere and Taurua Gay Duke was the unlucky Shaftesbury Handicap surprise eventuated in the Shaftesbury Handicap, the little-fan-cied British King £IBO, scoring comfortably. With all his weight, Subv- T aS i- made favourite with Valuation £604, and King Peg isai, being second and third choices Trc P sses V we y re flying i ® s , we re first prominent, but be£?f e a i5 U 5 1 °i 1S ilad been covered Joy p™ had taken charge irom King Uon Al A Palmares and ValuaAt r the end of two and a-half furlongs Joy Germ, King Peg, Air w?fi. m a line - leading Palmares tnil n Kl ”f’ Valuation and Envoy, this being the order until nearing the home turn, where Joy Germ had charge fiom Air King, Valuation, King Peg Palmares, Subdivision and British n f • . The last-named put in an electrifying run when they had straightened up, and went on to win bv a length and a-quarter, Air King being only a neck behind King Peg Jov Germ who faded over the last furlong was fourth. Herries* Memorial Though a winner on Monday last Mosque was only fancied to the extent of £390 in the Herries’ Memorial Cup, being seventh in the order of betting! his few supporters receiving a very satisfactory return. Most money was forthcoming for In the Shade £1,153,

Royal Doulton £902, ami Flying Juliet £899, the second horse, The Lover, carrying £ 500. The start took place in front of the stand, and as the field went out of the straight Royal Doulton, The Lover and Mosque were together ahead of Desert Glow, Flying Juliet, In the Shade and Queen Arch. Passing the mile peg there was practically no alteration, but running to the six. Mosque accepted the role of pacemaker, with Flying Juliet, The Lover and In the Shade following. Mosque still had charge crossing the top and into the straight, and at this stage The Lover, Royp.l Doulton, Queen Arch, Transformer, Flying Juliet and In the Shade were making their bid. Mosque hung on gamely, however, and got the verdict by a length and a-half from The Lover, who beat Royal Doulton by two lengths. Flying Juliet was fourth a length further back, followed by In the Shade, Transformer and Queen Arch. The favourite would have done a little better with a clearer run Waihou Handicap There was a surprise in store for backers in the Waihou Handicap, the winner turning up in Glenstar £291, his dividend not quite reaching double figures. As expected. Jolly Money £977, carried the confidence of the public, there also being plenty of support for Pegaway £585, and High Finance £SBO. Mosaic was left, High Finance going out fast from Pegaway, Kingfield, Glenstar and Tea Time, but the race was somewhat spoilt by the favourite, Jolly Money, falling and bringing down Macroom and Tea Time, just when a furlong had been covered! Kingfield disputed the lead with High Finance crossing the top, and this pair turned for home a length and ahalf ahead of Ruffles, who was a similar distance in front of Glenstar and I egaway. The last two put in a good burst of speed when straightened up, and in a desperate tight up the straight Glenstar gained the verdict by a neck, Rulfles being half a length away in third place. Kingfield was close up fourth and then came High Finance. Champion Hack Cup Although a big field went out .for the Champion Hack Cup backers were on the mark, the favourite, Black Maire, duly came home. For a favourvWo 6 Was a good price, carrying £owß as against Star Comet £490, and Lucy Rose £424. The second horse, Maori Boy, had £2BB invested on him. Ankitoa was left at the start and took no part in the race, and as the field turned out ot the straight Black Maire Iliin^or y ?°a Se ’ Ma . ori Boy ' Mussie and ilimgar, and passing the six furlong post Black Maire still had charge, with Lucy Rose, Mussie, Maori Boy, star Comet, Hakanoa and Brampton followsthi in th ® tOP the was ln van, and he led Lucy Rose Maori Boy.
