Jackson Stakes to Paganelli

GOOD RACING AT WANGANUI STAR AREA AND GOLD DAWN (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Saturday. Fine weather prevailed for the final day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting, when there was again a large attendance. Despite small fields, the racing was keen and exciting, and speculation brisk. The machine handled £28,557 for the day, compared with £20,327 on the concluding day last year. The total figures were £54,369 for the fixture, against £52,403 for the previous cup function, an increase of £1,966. When Avro fell in the Hannon Handicap, bringing down Hipo, riders Metcalfe and Marsh were removed to the hospital. Later inquiries showed that fortunately the injuries were not so serious as at first feared. Middling Pace Mister Gamp was favourite in the opening event, carrying £833, nearly twice as much as Gasnapper £475. The race was run at a middling pace. At the start Acrecl and Balloon showed out inf Font of Gasnapper, with Mister Gamp ajtd Kilorell last going out of the straight. When they ran to the six furrongs Acred and Kilorell were in the lead, a length ahead of Gasnapper and Balloon, Mister Gamp being a length in the rear. There was no change down the back and across the top, Acred being first into the straight from Balloon and Gasnapper. Mister Gamp made an effort at the distance, where Gasnapper headed Acred, hut the Gasbag gelding finished well and beat Acred by nearly half a length, with the favourite a length away and Kilorell next. Easy for Joy King For the Harrison Handicap Partaga C 782, was preferred to Blimp £613, Joy King .£540, with Avro £520 next heat supported. They got away to a good start, Joy King leading Blimp, Avro, Vigilance and Keddar out of the straight, with Hipo last. Running to the six furlongs, Avro fell and Hipo came down over him, the order down the back being Joy King, Vigilance, Partaga, Blimp, Imperial Spark and Maui. As they crossed the top Keddar moved up fast, ancl was in behind Joy King, Partaga and Blimp. Joy King turned for home ahead of Partaga, Keddar, Blimp and Imperial Spark, and came on to win comfortably by two and a-half lengths, Partaga lasting long enough to beat the fast-finishing Imperial Spark by a head. Blimp was fourth and Keddar and Maui followed. Paganelli Scores As expected, Paganelli monopolised The betting for the Jackson Stakes, having £l,Bll invested on his chances, five times as much as was on Cimabue and Gascony, who were evenly supported. They got away to a splendid start, racing for a furlong before Paganelli broke the line, to lead past the rive furlongs peg from Cimabue, Gascony, Monaloff and Lysandor. Cimabue got bis head in front of Paganelli as they commenced to cross the top, with Gascony and Lysander following, but the favourite was just in front turning for home, the pair being a length ahead of Gascony. Paganelli was going well in the run home, but Cimabue stuck to him, there being only half a length between the pair at the finish. Gascony was four lengths away third, a similar distance ahead of Lysander. The first furlong took 13 2-5, two 24, and three 35. Thrilling Finish In the Fordell Hurdles, Elicit £1,046, was the elect of backers, Vexatious £792, Vivo £573 also being supported. Vivo set out to make the pace a hot one, leading across the top and into the straight from Grand Lupin, Puwhero, Diaim’s Lid, Atareria, Elicit and Vexatious. Vivo knocked down a panel of t ie fence at the entrance to the* straight, and passing the stands the first time Vivo was showing the way to Grand Lupin, Puwhero, Elicit, Atareria, Liana’s Lad and Vexatious. Lown the back Vexatious was three lengths ahead of Grand Lupin, Elicit, Atareria, Puwhero and Liana’s Lad. Atareria ran into second place behind Vivo at the three-furlong post, with Grand Lupin and Elicit next, and the favourite was with Atareria and Vivo as they raced for the gap in the last fence. Once through there was a bit of bumping, in which Atareria suffered most. The trio raced for the judge m line, and it was a case of who Aodded first, Elicit getting Uia verdict

from Atareria, with Vivo third, noces only separating the three. Over ten lengths away was Grand Lupin, with Vexatious alongside him, and Roburant next. High Fa lutin’ Again For the Autumn Hack Handicap backers went for High Faluin* £1.507, with good support for Roi de Val £1,137 and Green Acre £614. Volplane, Green Acre, Vinella and Monsogne were the early leaders, and racing down the back Volplane, Vinella, Green Acre, Monsogne and Vaucleuse was the order. Across the top Volplane was still in the lead from Roi de Val, Vinella and High Falutin’, but when they turned for home the favourite was just in behind Volplane and Vinella, with Green Acre nearest of the others. Once straightened up High Falutin’ asserted his claim and beat Green Acre home by a length and a-half, two lengths away came Monsogne, followed by Vinella., Volplane and Roi de Val in that order. Star Area Prevails The Earle Stakes was a good betting race, four figures being on Laughing Prince £1,135, and Rapine £1,006, with a drop to Star Area £733. Mendip set out as pacemaker, being followed after they had gone 60 yards by Star Area, Orazone and Rapine, with Laughing Prince last. Past the stands Mendip was three lengths ahead of Star Area, who was a similar distance ahead of Orazone and Rapine, with Laughing Prince close up to the cup winner. Mendip went away in the back stretch and opened up a break of five lengths on the field, Star Area being another five lengths ahead of Orazone and Rapine, with Laughing Prince still last. Passing the threel'urlong post Mendip was still bowling along four lengths ahead of Star Area, who was just ahead of Laughing Prince and Orazone, with Rapine already out of it. The pacemaker turned for home ahead of Star Area and Laughing Prince, and a desperate finish was staged over the final furlong. Laughing Prince was up with the other pair 50 yards from the post, but weakened, and the hard-bidden Star Area finished gamely to win by a. head from Mendip, who was a neck in front of Laughing Prince. Five lengths away came Orazone, with Rapine last. The first four furlongs took 52, seven 1.31, and the mile 1.42 Favourites Fight Duel There was a great duel for favouritism between Coolmint Freehold in the Matarawa Hack, the former carrying £1,043 and the Fordell horse £9BO. The pait had the finish to themselves. Freehold was the first to show QUt, followed by Potency and Endorse, but when they settled down Endorse was showing the way to Freehold, Coolmint and Marica. There was another shuffle for positions running to the three furlongs, where Endorse was three lengths ahead of Marica and Coolmint, with Potency in front of Freehold. The order into the straight was the same, but the field had closed up. Freehold shot through at the distance to head off Coolmint and win by half a neck, with Marica three lengths away, a head in front of Endorse, and Warflame next. Outsider’s Victory The concluding event saw the usual big pool, with Ridgemount £1,930, more than twice as well backed as Royal Luke £B7O, while the outsider of the five was Gold Lawn £507. They got away to a good start, Ridgemount being first to show out from The Raider, Vast Acre and Gold Lawn. It did not take The Raider long to hit the front, however, and he opened up a break after going two furlongs, followed by Vast Acre. Ridgemount, Royal Luke and Gold Lawn. Thus they raced across the top, where The Raider was three lengths ahead of Vast Acre and Ridgemount, who was a similar distance ahead of Royal Luke. The Puiider turned for home first, but once the judges was sighted Gold Lawn came with a great run, and smothered the others for pace, beating The Raider by a length and a-quarter, Royal Luke being two lengths away third, and Ridgemount a poor fourth.
