DRIVE CONVINCES MEMBERS OF BOARD i MAIN HIGHWAYS TOUR (Special to THE SUN) KAWHIA, Thursday. j Last evening the members of the Main Highways Board arrived at | Kawhia from Te Awammutu. They ! were met by Mr. Babbage, chairman of j the Kawhia County Council, and mem- | bers of the council. The council asked for a grant to j improve the dangerous corners on the j roads from Kawhia to Kawa and from I Lemon Point to Waitomo Caves. The ! improvements were estimated to cost j £2OO. Mr. McKenzie, replying on behalf of I the Board, said that the thrills experi- ' enced by the party on the way out had | convinced them that something must j be done. The board had already de- 1 cided to set a number of unemployed ! men to work on the corners. Mr. Babbage then asked for an increased maintenance subsidy on the Kawhia-Oparau section, saying that last year’s upkeep had cost £lsl a mile as against £64 a mile in the previous year.
