POPE AND THE LEAGUE
ATTITUDE OF BRITAIN CHAMBERLAIN EXPLAINS British Official H7i reless RUGBY, Wednesday. In reply to questions in the House of Commons to-day. Sir Austen Chamberlain, Foreign Secretary, said he had no official information that the new Vatican State intended to apply for membership of the League of Nations. It- would be quite premature to divulge the attitude of the British Government toward an event which was so absolutely hypothetical. He did not think he could pledge the Government not to take such action as it might think proper as a member of the League. Bir Austen was asked 11 it had not been made clear that the Pope did not intend to seek any association with the League. He replied that he understood that was the case. He could not say whether the treaty between the Pope and the Government of Italy would necessitate any changes in the diplomatic relations between Britain and the Vatican.
