Fire Destroys Three Shops at Huntly
HOUSE ALSO BURNED EARLY MORNING BLAZE (From Our Own Correspondent) HUXTLY, To-day. Three shops and a house were destroyed when a disastrous fire broke out at Huntly about 1.30 this morning. The fire was soon noticed, but as there was rio fire brigade or water supply little could be done to check it The buildings destroyed were: A house of four rooms, owned ami occupied by Mr. E. R. Harris. A shop and dwelling of seven roon s. owned by Mr. Leslie Kosoof, draper, •and rear portion used as a. residence by the owner and family of four, the shop being tenanted by Mr. J. A. Malcolm, radio dealer. A shop and dwelling, owned by Mr. E. R. Harris and occupied by Mr. Richard Baldwin, draper, and bis family of four. A house and shop owned by Mr. E. R. Harris and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. John Turton and used as a boot shop.
Strenuous effort.-; by volunteers saved the house of Mr. W. H. Bailey, occurred by Mr. and Mrs. James Cunningham, saturated blankets being suspended from the roof.
The fire broke out in Mr. Baldwin's house and had a good hold when discovered, the family having no time to save anything. The buildings were old and burned rapidly, Mr. Harris losing practically everything. Being situated next to Mr. Baldwin’s, the contents of Mr. Malcolm’s shop, which abutted op to the main street and were uninsured, were nearly all saved, but owing to the heat •and limited space the contents of Mr. Kosoof’s dwelling were only partially saved. Turton’s stock and effects were all practically saved. Insurances are as follow:—E. R. Harris, two shops and dwellings, £1,100; furniture, £2OO, in New Zealand Office. Turton's stock and furniture in the National Office and Kosoof’s building and contents for £1,200. Baldwin's stock and effects for £3OO in the Standard Office.
OUTBREAK AT STRATFORD SHOP BURNED DOWN ANOTHER BADLY DAMAGED Press Association STRATFORD, To-day. Fire early this morning destroyed premises in Broadway occupied by Mr. Hawke, a hairdresser, and Mr. Ruscoe, a tailor. The brigade, by good luck, saved the fire from spreading to Bellringer Bros., ironmongers, next door, but their premises were damaged to some extent and the stock was considerably damaged by smoke and water. Hawke's stock and fittings were insured for £I,OOO, and Bellringer’s stock and building were insured for about £4,000.
